1100 GULDEN, EEN PAKJE SHAG EN EEN AANSTEKER
(1100 GUILDERS, A PACKET TOBACCO AND A LIGHTER)
My grandfather, Gerrit Hengeveld, committed suicide before I was born. This act has always fascinated me; especially his last steps, the route he walked from his studio to the river. I went back to this place and photographed his route from his atelier to the river.
I used the photographs I took to make a book. As a viewer, you can browse through the photographs of his route and ‘walk’ through as though you are him, walking the route, every time making a conscious choice towards the river.
With the same photos as in the book, I made an installation of one large print, with all the photographs as a map. De title refers to the things he left behind at the riverside, 1100 guilders, a packet tobacco and a lighter.
Book: 38, 4 x 29,7 cm printed on 120 grams biotop paper. 69 photographs printed as spreads. The book contains 11 removable parts.
